Most of us know that William Shakespeare was an Elizabethan playwright and one of the most famous writers in history, but did you know that he was also an actor in his own plays? There’s so much to learn about Shakespeare, so let’s get started!

  1. William Shakespeare was an English playwright, poet and actor born in April 1564 in England, and died on April 23, 1616.
  2. He is regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world’s pre-eminent dramatist.
  3. He is often called England’s national poet and the “Bard of Avon.”
  4. Shakespeare’s father, John Shakespeare, was known to be a glovemaker but also worked as a wool dealer and informal money-lender.
  5. His wife, Anne Hathaway, was 26 years old, and Shakespeare was 18 when they married. Their first child, Susanna, was born six months after the wedding.
  6. William Shakespeare wrote around 37 plays for the theatre and over 150 poems.

  1. There are several lost plays and plays that Shakespeare collaborated on, meaning he wrote an average of 1.5 plays a year since he first started writing in 1589.
  2. Shakespeare was also an actor who performed many of his own plays.
  3. Two of Shakespeare’s plays, Hamlet and Much Ado About Nothing, have been translated into Klingon, a language created for the Star Strek universe.
  4. Shakespeare’s name was recorded as Gulielmus Shakspere at his baptism in 1564, the Latin word for William.
  5. The Oxford English Dictionary has credited Shakespeare with introducing almost 3,000 words to the English language.
  6. Special effects during Shakespeare’s time included beating drums or rolling a cannonball to make the noise of thunder and throwing a powder into a candle flame to make a bolt of lightning.
