If you look closely, you can see what looks like little rocks growing on ships and backs of turtles. Those aren’t rocks at all, but tiny crustaceans. Barnacles are suspension feeders, sweeping small food into their mouth with their curved ‘feet’. They are cemented to rock (or such), and covered with hard plates, which they shut firmly when the tide goes out. This keeps them from drying out and dying. Their babies – called larvae – are microscopic and drift in the open ocean. Eventually, the larvae change and attach on other hard surfaces to form new barnacles.
