  1. Hanukkah, also known as the Festival of Light, is a joyful Jewish celebration. The word Hanukkah means dedication in Hebrew.
  2. Hanukkah celebrates the bravery of a group of rebel Jews called the Maccabees. They fought and reclaimed the Temple in Jerusalem from the Greek-Syrians.
  3. Hanukkah moves around on the calendar, but it’s always in November or December and lasts for eight exciting days.
  4. Yummy Hanukkah foods are fried in oil to remember the miraculous oil that lit the Temple for eight days! Tasty dishes like latkes, apple fritters, kugel, and more are enjoyed during this time.
  5. Did you know, in Israel, about 17.5 million sufganiyots (friend jelly doughnuts) are eaten during Hanukkah.

  1. Each night, one candle is lit for eight days to celebrate how long the Holy Temple stayed lit. Even though there was only enough oil for one night, it kept the Temple glowing for eight nights! Talk about a magical story.
  2. Hanukkah can be spelled in about 16 different ways! Since it comes from Hebrew letters, there’s no right or wrong way to spell it in English.
  3. The biggest Hanukkah menorah (called a hanukkiyah) in the world stands tall in New York. Imagine a 32-foot high, 4,000-pound hanukkiyah! You can find it at Grand Army Plaza in New York City.
  4. In the Jewish faith, holidays like Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, and Passover hold greater significance than Hanukkah. Hanukkah is considered a smaller celebration in comparison.
  5. During this holiday, Jewish tradition encourages children to learn the Torah by gifting them gelt, which are chocolate coins wrapped in gold foil. Gelt can also be won while playing the game of dreidel!
